Overview

As a Business Development Manager – Pharma Partnerships at Pluto Bio, you will be responsible for identifying, developing, and closing strategic partnerships with pharmaceutical companies. You will drive revenue growth by understanding the unique needs of our pharma customers and aligning our platform’s capabilities with their research and development goals.

This role requires a strong selling background in biology, bioinformatics, or NGS technologies, enabling you to independently and confidently sell to scientific stakeholders and translate their research goals into platform value and revenue. You’ll be expected to deeply understand your clients' programs and organizational priorities to ensure Pluto is consistently aligned as a trusted scientific and strategic partner.

This role also requires exceptional hustle, drive, and hard work. As the sole commercial team member, you will have a greenfield opportunity to source your own leads, drive opportunities all the way through to close, and reap all of the benefits from your efforts.

Compensation range

$90,000 - $235,000

The expected salary range above is applicable if the role is performed from Boston and may vary for other locations. Actual salary may vary based on qualifications and experience. Pluto offers a full range of benefits, which may include incentive compensation, restricted stock units, medical and other benefits depending on the position.

Responsibilities

  • Strategic partnerships: Cultivate long-term relationships with decision-makers at pharma companies, including R&D, innovation, and procurement teams
  • Solution selling: Serve as the liaison between the customer and internal teams, articulating how Pluto’s platform addresses the specific challenges in drug discovery and translational research
  • Value articulation: Clearly articulate the value proposition and ROI of Pluto’s platform for transcriptomics, epigenetics, genomics, and other applications, ensuring clients understand the financial, operational, and scientific benefits
  • Collaboration & negotiation: Develop tailored proposals, negotiate contracts, and most importantly, close deals!
  • Lead generation & prospecting: You will be responsible for developing new business opportunities within the pharmaceutical sector using industry research, networking, and inbound leads
  • Pipeline Management: Build and maintain a robust sales pipeline by qualifying prospects, managing relationships, and driving engagements through our sales funnel
  • Work closely with our marketing team to help build collateral, case studies, and valuable materials to empower champions
  • Market Intelligence: Stay current with trends and advancements in pharma R&D and digital health to position Pluto as a thought leader and preferred technology partner
  • Customer Onboarding: Collaborate with technical teams to ensure a smooth transition from sale to onboarding, serving as a key point of contact to address any business-level challenges during the initial engagement period
  • Revenue & Performance Metrics: Meet or exceed sales targets and deliver regular reports on pipeline activity, customer feedback, and market trends

Requirements

  • In the Greater Boston region
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Life Sciences, or a related field; MBA or advanced degree is a plus
  • 3+ years of business development or sales experience in the pharmaceutical, biotech, or healthcare technology sectors
  • Proven track record of building and maintaining strategic partnerships with pharma companies
  • Exceptional communication, presentation, and negotiation skills, with a strong ability to translate complex technical concepts for non-technical audiences
  • Sales experience in multi-omics, bioinformatics, or other life sciences / R&D / translational software platforms
  • Experience with CRM (e.g., Hubspot, SFDC) and market analysis platforms
  • Existing network and understanding of the pharma landscape, including key stakeholders in drug discovery and R&D
  • Ability to travel as needed for customer meetings, conferences, and strategic events

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in Life Sciences, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or a related field
  • Proficiency understanding or writing bioinformatics scripts in R or Python
  • A growth mindset and passion for learning, especially about biology, bioinformatics, AI/ML, or software engineering
